I step through the door, and the world changes.
The air is thick with sandalwood and something else—something sweet and metallic, like crushed berries left too long in the sun. Candles gutter in brass holders, their flames casting dancing shadows across silk-draped walls. My footsteps falter on the polished floor as I take in the scene before me.
Su Qingyi sits on a carved rosewood chair, her legs crossed, one foot suspended in the air. She wears a black lace dress that hugs her figure like a second skin, the hem riding high on her thighs. Her face is a mask of cold beauty—sharp cheekbones, lips painted the color of blood, eyes that see through flesh and bone. On her feet are stilettos, ten centimeters of wicked heel and gleaming patent leather.
At her feet, Liu Ruyan kneels.
Liu Ruyan—the woman every man in the city dreams of, with her flowing white gauze dress and legs that go on forever, now sheathed in nude stockings that catch the candlelight. But now her head is bowed, her shoulders trembling, a leather collar strapped around her neck. A thin chain connects the collar to Su Qingyi's hand.
I hide behind the silk screen, my heart hammering against my ribs. I should leave. I should turn and walk away. But my feet are rooted to the floor.
"You know what happens to those who disobey," Su Qingyi says, her voice like honey over broken glass.
Liu Ruyan lifts her head. Tears streak her perfect face, mascara smudged beneath her eyes. "Please, Mistress. I'll do anything."
Su Qingyi smiles. It is not a kind smile. She extends her foot, the toe of her stiletto finding Liu Ruyan's chin, lifting it higher. "Lick."
Liu Ruyan's lips part. Her tongue emerges, pink and hesitant, and touches the black patent leather. She licks once, twice, her breathing quick and shallow. The sound is wet, obscene in the quiet room.
"Harder," Su Qingyi commands.
Liu Ruyan presses her mouth against the shoe, her tongue working the surface, cleaning an invisible stain. Her hands clench at her sides, nails digging into her palms. But she does not stop.
Su Qingyi pulls her foot away, then brings it down against Liu Ruyan's cheek in a sharp slap. The sound cracks through the air. A red mark blooms on Liu Ruyan's skin, spreading like a wound. She gasps, tears spilling over, but she does not move.
"Such a pretty face," Su Qingyi murmurs, examining her victim. "It would be a shame to ruin it permanently. But temporary marks can be arranged."
"Please," Liu Ruyan whispers. "I'll be good. I swear."
"Will you?" Su Qingyi uncrosses her legs, stands, and circles behind Liu Ruyan. Her heels click on the floor like a countdown. She stops, reaches down, and unclips the chain from the collar. Then she picks up a feather brush from the table beside her—soft white feathers bound to a silver handle.
She brushes it along Liu Ruyan's neck.
Liu Ruyan shivers, her body betraying her. The feathers trace her collarbone, her shoulder, the curve of her throat. She tries to hold still, but tremors run through her like ripples in water.
"Crawl to the bed," Su Qingyi says.
Liu Ruyan obeys. She drops to all fours, her white dress pooling around her, her nude stockings rustling against the floor. The chain of her collar drags behind her, jingling with each movement. Her knees and palms press into the cold wood as she moves toward the four-poster bed draped in crimson silk.
Su Qingyi follows, the feather brush still in her hand. She stops beside the bed, watching Liu Ruyan's slow progress. When Liu Ruyan reaches the foot of the bed, she hesitates, looking up.
"Kneel," Su Qingyi says.
Liu Ruyan rises to her knees, hands folded in her lap. Her eyes are red, her lip trembling. "What do you want me to do?"
"Bow."
Liu Ruyan bends forward, her forehead pressing against the floor. The sound is dull, muffled by the wood. She holds the position, her body tense.
"Again."
She hits the floor again, harder this time. And again. And again. Each thud echoes through the room, and I count them in my head—one, two, three, four, five. Her forehead is red when she straightens, a bruise already forming.
"This is what happens when you disobey," Su Qingyi says, her voice flat. "Next time, it will be your nose."
Liu Ruyan sobs, a broken sound that she tries to swallow.
"Now, up." Su Qingyi gestures to the beam that runs across the ceiling, fitted with iron rings and ropes. "You know what to do."
Liu Ruyan rises slowly, her legs unsteady. She walks to the beam, and Su Qingyi follows, taking a length of silk rope from the table. She binds Liu Ruyan's wrists together, then loops the rope through the iron ring, hauling until Liu Ruyan's arms stretch above her head, her toes barely touching the floor.
Liu Ruyan hangs there, suspended, her body swaying slightly. The white gauze dress falls open, revealing her nude-stockinged legs, the curve of her hips. Her chest rises and falls rapidly.
Su Qingyi walks to the corner, where a black leather case sits. She opens it, revealing an array of tools—whips, paddles, clamps, things I cannot name. She selects a long whip, its tail thin and cruel, and returns to stand behind Liu Ruyan.
"This will remind you," she says, "of who owns you."
The whip cracks.
Liu Ruyan screams.
The leather strikes her perineum, the sensitive flesh between her thighs. She jerks, her body convulsing against the ropes. The whip falls again, landing across the same spot. Another scream, louder this time, raw and desperate.
I press my hand to my mouth, my pulse roaring in my ears. I should stop this. I should step out and say something. But I cannot move. I cannot breathe.
Su Qingyi strikes again and again, each blow landing with precision. Liu Ruyan's screams turn to sobs, then to whimpers. Her body sags in the ropes, exhausted, defeated.
"Enough." Su Qingyi drops the whip and steps closer. She reaches down and unstraps her stilettos, kicking them aside. Her feet are bare now—delicate arches, slender ankles, toes painted with red nail polish that gleams in the candlelight.
She walks to Liu Ruyan and lifts her foot, pressing her toes against Liu Ruyan's chest. She finds the nipple beneath the gauze and pinches it between her toes, twisting and kneading. Liu Ruyan gasps, biting her lip so hard it bleeds.
"Such lovely nipples," Su Qingyi muses. "So responsive."
She releases and lowers Liu Ruyan from the ropes. Liu Ruyan crumples to the floor, breathing hard, her body shaking. Su Qingyi sits on the edge of the bed and extends her foot.
"Now," she says, "you may thank me."
Liu Ruyan looks at the foot before her—the arch, the toes, the red polish. For a moment, she hesitates. Then she leans forward, her tongue darting out to touch the skin. She licks Su Qingyi's toes, one by one, her movements small and tentative.
Su Qingyi reaches down and touches Liu Ruyan's hair, almost gently. "You see? Obedience is rewarded."
She pulls her foot away and stands, walking to a drawer. She removes a pair of stockings—black lace, delicate, the edge trimmed with intricate patterns. She holds them up to the candlelight.
"Wacoal," she says. "The finest silk. Feel the texture."
Liu Ruyan presses her cheek against the stockings, her eyes closed. The fabric is soft, cool, smooth against her face.
"Now put them on." Su Qingyi tosses the stockings to Liu Ruyan, then points to a pair of knee-high boots beside the bed—black, ten-centimeter heels, buckles glinting. "And these."
Liu Ruyan obeys, her hands trembling as she pulls on the stockings, the lace hugging her legs. She steps into the boots, fastening the buckles, and stands. She sways, unsteady on the heels, her balance compromised.
Su Qingyi watches, then steps behind her and kicks the back of Liu Ruyan's knee. Liu Ruyan collapses, her knees hitting the floor with a crack.
"Better," Su Qingyi says. "You can't be trusted to stand."
She retrieves a silicone dildo from the case, thick and veined, and sets it on the table. Then she picks up a pair of nipple clamps, their jaws cruel and toothed. She clamps them onto Liu Ruyan's nipples through the gauze, and Liu Ruyan hisses at the pain. A chain connects the clamps, and Su Qingyi takes the other end, pulling gently.
"Follow," she says.
Liu Ruyan crawls, the chain pulling her forward, her breasts stretched, her nipples screaming. She moves toward the center of the room, where a basin of water sits.
"Kneel."
Liu Ruyan kneels, and Su Qingyi takes a cloth, dipping it in ice water. She wrings it out and presses it against Liu Ruyan's groin, through the stockings and the dress.
Liu Ruyan screams, her body arching, her legs kicking. The cold is unbearable, a shock that seeps into her core. She tries to pull away, but Su Qingyi holds her in place, pressing the cloth harder.
"Still," Su Qingyi commands.
Liu Ruyan cannot. Her body rebels, twisting and thrashing. And then she loses control. A stream of urine runs down her thighs, darkening the stockings, pooling on the floor.
Su Qingyi laughs—a cold, cruel sound. "Can't even control that, can you?"
Liu Ruyan collapses, weeping, her body a ruin.
I back away from the screen, my heart a drum. My hands shake. My mouth is dry. I slip out of the room, moving on silent feet, and run to my own chamber.
I sit on the edge of my bed, staring at the wall. The images replay in my mind—the whip, the screams, the jade feet, the red polish. Liu Ruyan's vacant eyes as she was led away later, her gait strange, her spirit broken.
I touch my own groin and feel shame.
The door opens. I look up.
Su Qingyi stands in the doorway, silhouetted against the candlelight from the hall. She steps inside, and I see she holds something in her hand.
"Here," she says, and tosses it to me.
I catch it. A pair of black stockings, still warm from her hand. They smell of sandalwood and something sweet.
"Come to my room tomorrow," she says.
I open my mouth to refuse. But my voice is gone. Instead, I nod.
She smiles, that cold, knowing smile, and leaves.
I sit in the darkness, the stockings clutched in my hands. Moonlight streams through the window lattice, pooling on the floor. I bring the stockings to my face and breathe in.
My body trembles with anticipation.
"It's just curiosity," I whisper to myself.
But I know it is not.
I lie down and close my eyes, but I cannot sleep. Su Qingyi's jade feet float before me—her delicate ankles, her toes with their red nails. The image of Liu Ruyan, crawling, weeping, broken.
Tomorrow, I think. Tomorrow I will go.
And a part of me, the part I am ashamed to acknowledge, cannot wait.
